Women Warriors ¡LAS SANDINISTAS! Interview

By Kristin Suratt on Thursday, May 3rd, 2018 in Documentary, Matheson PAC, Mendocino Village, News.

las sandinistas

Tune in to Forthright Radio for Joy LaClaire’s interview with Jenny Murray about her documentary film, ¡LAS SANDINISTAS! which depicts the crucial role played by the women who fought in Nicaragua during the reign of the Somoza government. The film uses both archival footage from the 1960s, ’70s and ’80s, and recent interviews. These women survived brutal repression, poverty, disease, economic inequality, and social injustice, and now, 35 years later, they continue to lead the struggle. Listen to the interview here.

Women Warriors: Combat and Social Reform

These extraordinary women shattered barriers and became leaders in combat and social reform during Nicaragua’s 1979 Sandinista Revolution. Yet, in spite of their sacrifices and battlefield victories, they must once again brave the streets. Today, they lead the struggle to end suppression of women’s rights and gender violence in Nicaragua. Their stories are both fascinating and inspiring.

Women Highlighted in the Film

  • General Dora María was Minister of Health from 1985 – 1990.
  • Poet Daisy Zamorra became Minister of Culture after serving as an FSLN combatant and the voice of the clandestine Radio Sandino. In spite of her dramatic success, she was “fired” after refusing the unwanted advances of a member of the all male 9-member Directorate.
  • Monica Baltodano “La Jefa” was a Sandanista general who worked in the movement for several decades, before leaving in 2005 to form the Movement to Reclaim Sandinismo, known as El Rescate.
  • Dora María Téllez founded the MRS (Sandinista Renovation Movement) for democratic reforms in 1994. The struggle continues and these powerful women persevere.

The film was the winner of the 2018 Chicken-and-Egg Award at SXSW Film Festival.
