(Q&A with filmmaker after screening)

When Xiaobin arrives in Buenos Aires, she is unable to speak a word of Spanish. Just days later, she has a new name and a job at a Chinese supermarket. Her family, however, keeps to their laundromat, isolated from other Argentinians. Xiaobin is determined to overcome the language barrier and secretly joins a language school. After the lesson on ‘Setting up an appointment’ she arranges a date, beginning a clandestine relationship with Vijay. After practicing the conditional, the tense of the hypothetical, Xiaobin’s imagination takes flight and she starts to think about her future. As she begins to master the language, it offers Xiaobin a new way to articulate her hopes, dreams and fears. Meanwhile, her Chinese classmates become a Greek Chorus, commenting on developments as they transpire. In Spanish and Mandarin with English subtitles.
