“We artists, we musicians… We’re people who need music.”

Fatoumata Diawara

Mali Blues illustrates Mali’s rich musical culture. Alongside Fatoumata Diawara – the young shooting star of the global pop scene – we travel through breathtaking landscapes and discover Mali’s agitated heart.
Diawara symbolizes a young and capable generation of African women: energetic, strong-minded, confident, and politically engaged. In defiance of the religious militants battling for control of the country, Diawara decides to arrange a “Mali All-Star Orchestra” to play a concert in Timbuktu, striving to unify artists throughout Mali who want to defend their right to enjoy and perform music. These artists hail from different parts of the country, belong to different ethnic groups, and represent different musical styles and traditions, but they all have one goal: Protecting Mali’s unique musical and cultural heritage. In French with English subtitles.
