“A compelling rendering of life with autism. An educational achievement masquerading as a feel-good documentary, and a must-watch.”
The real-life story of Owen Suskind, the son of the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Ron Suskind and his wife, Cornelia, Life Animated explores Owen’s experience growing up with autism. Unable to speak for years, Owen memorized dozens of Disney movies and turned them into a language to express love and loss, kinship, brotherhood. In order to connect with him, the family was forced to take on the role of animated characters, communicating with him in Disney dialogue and song. Illuminating the human need for stories and the power of fictional narratives to reveal fundamental truths, this heartwarming documentary was directed by Academy® Award winner and Mendocino Film Festival alumnus Roger Ross Williams and won the Sundance Directing Award at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.
