“A virtually unknown gem. One of the sweetest, most touching romances of the decade.”

Dustin Putman, The Film File

“The rules of the dogfight were simple: Everyone puts in 50 bucks. And the guy with the ugliest ‘date’ wins.” On the eve of shipping out to Vietnam, Corporal Eddie Birdlace (River Phoenix) decides to participate in a mean-spirited “dogfight” with his fellow servicemen – and promptly gets more than he bargains for. Rose Fenny, the young woman he invites, quickly learns the truth and storms out. To his surprise, Eddie realizes that he likes his “date,” and he must set out on a quest to redeem himself. What follows is an illuminating evening, as he gets to know his former target, who is enamored of the counterculture movement, while she realizes that he may not be as much of a jerk as she thought.
