“Villani’s infectious enthusiasm and his obvious love for this music sweeps us along with him. From the opening images of the sea, to the fluid motion of Villani’s hands across the keyboard, to recurring themes of food and Italian life, Crossing Rachmaninoff is as much a delight for the senses as it is emotionally compelling.”
Q&A with Flavio Villani after screening
Crossing Rachmaninoff follows pianist Flavio Villani as he prepares Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 for his first ever performance with an orchestra. Filmed in Auckland, New Zealand, and southern Italy, the film follows Flavio’s journey as he grapples with his challenging work, returning to Italy to perform the piece – and reuniting with his family, who once discouraged him from following a career in music. And the camera stays with him as he takes to the stage with the Orchestra Filarmonica della Calabria for his big debut. Will his night in the spotlight bring despair or triumph? A compelling and uplifting personal odyssey, Crossing Rachmaninoff demonstrates the value of artistic endeavor, the importance of self-belief, and the desire to be accepted for who we are.
